When vampires, a sorcerer, a werewolf, and a black cat disrupt the protagonist's quiet life, he must decide who to help and who to be wary of. He ends up aiding the vampires, saving the werewolf, and punishing the sorcerer. He even manages to befriend the cat, despite the Herald's nature seemingly precluding friendships. Yet, miracles occur once every millennium, allowing a chimera to seek friendship with the undead, and the undead to desire humanity once more.
