Georgy P. Katyuk, 2016, Historical Discoveries
This book presents an unconventional perspective on the origins of the East-West confrontation, with Russia often at its center. The author challenges the common belief that the country's natural resources are the primary cause. Instead, the argument posits that pressure on the East and Russophobia are continuations of Western policy towards Byzantium, a successor state of which Russia became, known as the 'Third Rome'. Europe, assuming a political leadership role, allegedly retained a deep-seated animosity towards the imperial center, which it saw embodied in Russia after Byzantium. The author suggests the Crusades were a key tool for reshaping the world, not primarily for defending Christian shrines, but for compelling Constantinople to adopt Western Christianity and acknowledge the primacy of the Western Church.
