The advent of railways in 19th-century Britain spurred economic and social revolution, marked by technical advancements documented through detailed plans. These drawings, essential for manufacturing and maintaining the rapidly expanding railway network, encompassed locomotives, carriages, wagons, stations, bridges, and tunnels.
Christopher Valkoinen has curated over 130 drawings from the National Railway Museum in York, showcasing engineering innovations and triumphs like the Forth Bridge. The collection features the work of pioneers such as Richard Trevithick, George Stephenson, and Nigel Gresley. Plans range from Queen Victoria's royal saloon and a traveling post office to a station tea-room at York, and even modern hovertrain experiments.
