Альке шестнадцать. Его детство, прошедшее в аду блокадного Ленинграда, закалило его дух, научило выживать, но не притупило стремления к справедливости. Учителя, знакомые, даже его любимая тренер – молодая, грациозная гимнастка – все ушли на фронт. Пустота, оставшаяся после их ухода, заполняется лишь одним желанием: взять в руки оружие и защитить свою Родину.
Нашед на пыльном рынке слишком большую военную форму, он, преодолевая страх и сомнения, тайком пробирается в переполненный военный эшелон. Страха перед войной он уже не испытывает – блокада научила его видеть смерть в лицо. Его единственный страх – быть отвергнутым, не быть принятым в ряды защитников, не получить шанс сражаться за свою жизнь и жизнь своей страны. Это история о храбрости подростка, о взрослении, обретенном слишком дорогой ценой, о столкновении с нечеловеческой жестокостью войны.
Sixteen-year-old Alka’s childhood, spent in the hellish crucible of the besieged Leningrad, forged his spirit, teaching him survival but not extinguishing his yearning for justice. His teachers, friends, even his beloved gymnastics coach – a young, graceful athlete – have all marched off to war. The emptiness left by their absence is filled only by one desire: to take up arms and defend his Motherland.
Finding an oversized military uniform in a dusty marketplace, he secretly boards a crowded troop train, battling fear and self-doubt. The fear of war itself is absent – the siege has taught him to stare death in the face. His only fear is rejection, the fear of not being accepted into the ranks of defenders, of not being given the chance to fight for his life and the life of his country. This is a story of a teenager's bravery, of a coming-of-age bought at too high a price, of confronting the inhuman cruelty of war.
