Elena Safonova, 2021
In 1930, Elena Safonova, a student of Petrov-Vodkin, released the picture book "River." Its illustrations lacked perspective, resembling maps or children's drawings, with a concise color palette echoing her mentor's style. The second edition in 1935 presented a different vision, reflecting the shift in Soviet aesthetic policy where experimentation was discouraged, leading to the author's exile. These two editions serve as documents of distinct Soviet eras: one of avant-garde exploration and the other of censored "neoclassicism." Both versions are skillfully executed, depicting life along rivers and the evolution of industrial landscapes.
